Occupy’s Asshole Problem: Flashbacks From An Old Hippie
Commentary in response to the above article. . .
During Oakland, California’s recent General Strike, a fringe group of occupiers who appeared to be black-bloc anarchists defaced local banks, smashed in windows and set police barricades on fire. This is counterintuitive and clashes with the most basic, precious tenant of the Occupy movement as a whole: that all protests must be peaceful, even in the face of violent police crackdown.
Smashed window at an Oakland, California business with an apologetic sign from #OCCUPYOAKLAND.
Images like these have become more and more common as the mass media tactfully spreads misinformation about the Occupy movement, implying that violence may be harbored in the hearts of many. Any large group resorting to violence in any way could completely undermine the movement, even if it was in response to unjust police violence. The devious actions of the few incidentally speak loudly for the movement as a whole, something that must be understood and prevented.
Water Bottles "block the public way" in Chicago, IL
Other localized incidents speak to the completely ridiculous way in which law enforcement is treating the Occupy protests. Tweeted from an occupier in Chicago, IL, the police in this photo have claimed that the water donated to #OCCUPYCHICAGO. As such, all of this donated water was confiscated. The absurdity of this is self-evident.
These are not isolated incidents. Across the United States and around the globe occupiers are being watched by Homeland Security and Counter-Terrorism units. Peaceful occupation has turned into a criminal act worthy not only of public scorn but of literal arrest on whatever grounds are possible, no matter how outlandish. It is important to keep a watchful eye on this as the occupations continue to expand. Check out the original link that this commentary is a response to and decide for yourself which side of this debate retains the power to compromise and be reasonable.
